Pickleball Rules: Enjoying the Game

Whether you're a seasoned player or just starting out, mastering the rules is essential for enjoying this exciting sport. Here's a breakdown of the key USA Pickleball rules to get you on the court in no time.

The Basics

  • Gameplay: Pickleball is played with paddles and a perforated plastic ball on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net. Points are scored only by the serving team, with games typically going to 11 points and a 2-point lead.
  • Singles vs. Doubles: You can play pickleball as singles or doubles. The basic rules remain the same, but court positioning and strategies differ slightly.

 Serving

  • Serve Motion: The serve must be initiated with an upward motion and contact the ball below the waist. A "drop serve" where the ball is dropped and hit after bouncing is also permitted.
  • The Serve: The serve is diagonal across the net, with a double bounce rule before volleying (hitting the ball in the air) is allowed.

 Playing

  • Double Bounce Rule: After the serve, both teams must let the ball bounce once in their court before returning it. This extends rallies and eliminates the serve-and-volley advantage.
  • The "Kitchen": Officially known as the Non-Volley Zone (NVZ), this area extends 7 feet from the net on both sides. Players cannot enter the "kitchen" before the ball bounces in this area. This rule encourages rallies and prevents powerful smashes from close to the net.

Scoring and Faults

  • Scoring: The serving team scores a point if the receiving team commits a fault or fails to return the ball in play.
  • Faults: Common faults include hitting the ball out of bounds, entering the "kitchen" before the bounce, or the ball bouncing twice on your side.

 Beyond the Basics:

The the official USA Pickleball Rulebook goes into much more detail, including:

  • Specific foot faults during the serve.
  • Rules regarding line calls and lets.
  • Regulations for dead balls and hindered plays.
  • Detailed explanations of various faults and their consequences.
